I have often been asked if it safe for pregnant women to be around other people who smoke. We all know that it is not safe for a pregnant woman (or anyone) to smoke, but some people believe that it is quite safe to be around other people who are smoking, say in a well-ventilated area. It's wise to avoid passive smoke as much as possible. Even if you're not the one smoking, some of the smoke will get into your bloodstream – and flow on to the baby - if you're inhaling second-hand smoke. The other issue is that passive cigarette smoke contains less oxygen than air, so your baby will receive less oxygen. The more you're around someone who's smoking, the greater the risk to your baby.
Studies have shown that pregnant women who are exposed to passive cigarette smoke may give birth to babies who weigh less than the babies of women who aren't exposed.
