Midwives ... prescribing medications?

In around six months, eligible midwives who have a completed an approved course in pharmacology will be able to prescribe medications for women and babies during pregnancy, birth and in the newborn period.  This is a first for Australia, and something that midwives are really looking forward to. The course work has started - it is a distance-education course through Flinders University, and it is a Graduate Certificate in Midwifery.  It is a six-month course.

The workload is quite rigorous, with reading, case studies, an exam a portfolio to complete and also quizzes.

This will be a first for Australia, where midwives will be able to prescribe some of the more common medications that are used throughout the maternity care episode.
