It's a good question, and helps to put into perspective just how long a newborn baby needs to feed for. In the first few days, a newborn baby will feed 12-15 times a day, for around an hour at each feed. This means 12-15 hours of feeding a day!
Women who feed in this way, by giving their baby unrestricted access to the breast, will find that they have a great supply and a baby who gains a good amount of weight in the first few weeks.
By about 3 weeks of age, a baby will generally not feed for as long: the feeds will be around 30 minutes, every 2-3 hours.
