Maternity care

Most women discover they are pregnant when they take a home pregnancy test.  Once this has happened, the next step is to have your pregnancy confirmed by a private midwife or GP.  Once this has been done, the next step is to consider options for care and identify the option that will best meet your needs.

Maternity care is specialised health care that is provided by midwives, GPs and obstetricians.  It is an area of health care that focuses on caring for pregnant women and their babies.

Maternity care starts as early as 4 weeks of pregnancy, when you take a home pregnancy test or have your pregnancy confirmed by a midwife or GP. Maternity care then continues throughout your pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care (care for the first 6 weeks after baby has arrived).
